There are a few minor plumbing issues that most homeowners can fix on their own — if they have the following plumbing tools:
- Plunger
A plunger is a must-have for every homeowner. Rather than calling in the plumber as soon as the toilet gets clogged, try using a plunger.
Consider purchasing a plunger with a gasket, also called a beehive plunger, that fits inside the toilet. The gasket creates a stronger seal, helping create more suction to dislodge obstructions within the toilet.
For sink clogs, a beehive plunger is a better option. It’s smaller but specifically created to dislodge clogs in sink and bathtub drains.
- Toilet auger
A toilet auger, also known as a snake, forces debris down the drain and into the sewer line. It’s a great tool to have when the plunger fails.
- Caulking gun
A caulking gun is used to seal cracks in the shower, window seals, and other areas around the home. Be sure to also buy a backup supply of caulking.
- Basin wrench
A basin wrench can be used to make repairs in hard-to-reach and confined areas, such as under the sink. This type of wrench is made in various sizes and can be adjusted.
- Duct tape
Duct tape is highly durable, sticky, and water-resistant, making it an important tool for addressing plumbing issues. Be sure to have a few rolls on hand in case of an emergency.
- Pipe wrench
A pipe wrench is adjustable, able to lock into place, and works well with rounded surfaces. This is a critical tool every homeowner should have in their plumbing toolbox.
- Plumber’s putty
Plumber’s putty is used to prevent leaks around seals. It’s used around faucets, drains, and joints around the home. Keep a container of plumber’s putty on hand to stop leaks from joints that aren’t under pressure.
- Needle nose pliers
Needle nose pliers are used to work with very small objects in tight places and are a must have for all homeowners.
Though not all plumbing issues can be done DIY, with these tools, homeowners will be prepared to tackle basic challenges around the home.
