Whether you’re a single parent or a soccer mom with a van full of kids, plumbing emergencies is not something you plan for in your day. But what you can do is create an emergency plumbing repair kit so that you can be prepared to make the necessary repairs quickly and efficiently. Here are a few tools and equipment every homeowner should have in their emergency plumbing repair kit.
Toolbox
First order of business is to purchase a toolbox to store all of your tools in one place. Stop by a local hardware store to pick one up just for plumbing.
Plunger
A plunger is the first device you’ll use to clear a clog. A plunger can be used to unclog toilets, drains, sinks, and bathtubs. However, the type of plunger you will use will vary depending on where the clog is located.
Pipe wrench
A pipe wrench has a toothed jaw that’s designed to grip and turn threaded pipes and pipe fittings. You’ll need two pipe wrenches: one to grip the pipe and the other to turn the fitting. Pipe wrenches are sold in sizes from 12 to 18 inches.
Adjustable wrench
When you need to fit a range of nuts, bolts, and fittings that have a flat side, an adjustable wrench is the answer. Be sure to have a 10-inch wrench in your kit.
Pliers
Pliers are the tool to use when you need to grab, pull, hold, twist, tighten, or loose pipes and fittings. Store a rib-joint pair of pliers in your tool kit to firmly grip objects.
Slip joint
A slip joint is used to create a water-tight seal for non-pressurized drainage. It’s made of a gasket and a threaded nut.
Multi-bit screwdriver
The multi-bit screwdriver can be used to replace faucet washers and disassemble plumbing-related appliances. They’re made in many different sizes, but consider purchasing two or three for your toolkit.
Teflon tape
Teflon tape is used to secure pipes, valves, showerheads, faucets, and other plumbing components to make the connections leak-proof.
Closet auger
To unclog a toilet, you may need to use a closet auger. It has a long steel cable that can clear tough clogs.
